Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) covers a significant portion of your healthcare expenses, but it doesn't cover everything. You are still responsible for deductibles, coinsurance, and copays. **Medicare Supplement Insurance**, commonly referred to as **Medigap**, is private insurance designed to "bridge the gap" and pay these outstanding out-of-pocket costs.
Core Benefits of a Medigap Plan
Many seniors prefer Medigap policies over Medicare Advantage due to several unique advantages:
- **No Doctor Networks**: You can visit any physician or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare. No referrals are ever needed to see a specialist.
- **Nationwide Coverage**: Perfect for retirees who travel frequently or split their time between states (snowbirds).
- **Predictable Expenses**: Depending on the plan you choose, your out-of-pocket medical costs could be reduced to near-zero.
- **Guaranteed Renewable**: As long as you pay your premiums on time, the insurance company cannot cancel your policy, regardless of any health issues that develop.
Standardized Medigap Plans (Plan G, N, & F)
Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government and labeled by letters (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N). This means Plan G offers the exact same coverage benefits regardless of which insurance carrier you buy it from. The only difference is the premium price.
**Plan G**: The most popular plan for new enrollees. It covers 100% of all Medicare out-of-pocket costs except for the small Part B annual deductible.
**Plan N**: Offers lower monthly premiums in exchange for small copays (up to $20 for office visits and $50 for emergency room visits). It also does not cover Part B excess charges.
**Plan F**: The most comprehensive plan, covering 100% of all costs, including the Part B deductible. However, it is only available to individuals who became eligible for Medicare prior to January 1, 2020.
When is the Best Time to Enroll?
The absolute best time to buy a Medigap policy is during your **Medigap Open Enrollment Period**. This 6-month window begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have "guaranteed issue rights," meaning insurance companies cannot ask health questions, audit medical history, or charge you higher premiums due to pre-existing conditions.
