All-in-One Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage plans, also known as **Medicare Part C**, represent a popular alternative to Original Medicare. Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare, these plans combine your Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage into a single, comprehensive plan. Most Medicare Advantage policies also include prescription drug coverage (Part D) and extra health wellness perks.
What Does Medicare Advantage Cover?
By law, Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything that Original Medicare covers. However, they go beyond the basics by frequently providing additional benefits not covered by Parts A and B:
- **Dental Care**: Regular cleanings, exams, X-rays, and even major procedures.
- **Vision & Hearing**: Coverage for eye exams, glasses, contact lenses, and hearing aid fittings.
- **Fitness Programs**: Free memberships to programs like SilverSneakers.
- **Wellness Programs**: Over-the-counter (OTC) drug stipends, transportation support for medical visits, and nurse hotlines.
HMO vs. PPO Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage plans generally fall into two categories:
**Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)**: You generally must get your care from doctors and hospitals within the plan’s local network. A referral is usually required to see a specialist. HMO plans typically feature lower premiums and copays.
**Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)**: You have the flexibility to see any doctor or specialist without a referral, both in-network and out-of-network (though out-of-network care will have higher cost-sharing).
Enrollment Windows
You can only enroll in or switch Medicare Advantage plans during specific periods:
- **Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)**: The 7-month window surrounding your 65th birthday.
- **Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)**: October 15 to December 7 each year. Changes take effect on January 1.
- **Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)**: January 1 to March 31. If you are already enrolled in an Advantage plan, you can switch to another one or return to Original Medicare during this time.
